STEMS
~Frequently Asked Questions~
Q: Why do we have to learn word parts?
A: The English language is a beautiful thing! It is made up of many different languages - a melting pot of words, if you will. Most of our language comes from Greek and Latin. If we examine the words we use everyday, we will find bits and pieces of Greek and Latin. These "bits and pieces" are called STEMS. When you learn the meaning of one STEM, you are learning the basis of many English words, thus growing your vocabulary exponentially. I like to call it "power learning."
Q: How many do we learn?
A: Honors students will learn 15 new STEMS every two weeks. However, it is important to note that we will learn them "cumulatively," which means previously learned STEMS will show up on each quiz or test. So, it is very important to always review past STEMS lists. If there are a few that you struggle with, really focus in on them as they will probably appear again on a future quiz or test.
Q:How will I be graded?
A: All of your STEMS assignments will be digital (no paper). You will have homework assignments in Quizlet that will be checked for completion. You will also have homework and classwork assignments in Google Classroom that will be graded for accuracy (Context Clues and Mystery Questions). At the end of the week, you will either have a cumulative quiz or test where you will give each stem's meaning (spelling counts).
Q: What is the best way to study?
A: Have you ever heard the phrase "Slow and steady wins the race"? That is the best way to approach studying stems - a little bit every day. Cramming the night before is not recommended. You will be given a Quizlet account with all Stems lists. Using Quizlet is the BEST way to study - hands down.
